THE LINK BETWEEN PCOS & EMOTIONAL/ BINGE EATING

Studies show that there are huge links between PCOS and binge/ emotional eating. So if you've recently been diagnosed with PCOS, you may find it a relief to know that you are not alone.

🌻 Emphasis on weight loss:

If you've been to the doctors about your PCOS diagnosis, you may have found that you were given the advice to "just move more and eat less" or "lose some weight" in order to see an improvement.

The truth is, that kind of advice is severely unhelpful as women often then run to the quickest fad or restrictive diet to try and lose weight quickly. This is NEVER sustainable and often leads to further weight gain.

It also causes symptoms to become worse as under-eating and overexercising contributes to hormonal imbalance.

🌱 Emphasis on weight loss - body image:

Not only does emphasis on weight loss cause an unhealthy approach to food, but it also means that women can become resentful of their bodies.

This in turn leads to destructive behaviour around food and increased frustration when it comes to working on their health.

Body shame is not a good motivator for adopting healthier habits and usually ends in a further disrupted relationship with food.

⚑️ Increased cravings and blood sugar dips:

A common symptom of PSOS is increased cravings particularly for sugary or quick fix foods, which obviously doesn't help when it comes to binge eating. Impulse control around food becomes difficult due to the appetite stimulating effects of high androgen levels.

Insulin resistance PCOS, which is the most common type, means that women are also battling with blood sugar disregulation which increases risk or cravings. It also increases the risk of mood swings, which often results in using food to cope with negative emotion.

πŸ‹ So, how do you approach PCOS with binge eating?

It's absolutely PARAMOUNT to concentrate first on healing your relationship with food, stop restricting, counting calories and using food to cope with your emotions.

Once you have done this you can start making more adjustments from a place of love and care for your body that include:

  • Nutrition specific for hormones

  • Stress management

  • Sleep

  • Mindful movement

  • Lifestyle
